What is the difference between IV and other routes?
Intravenous infusion offers the most precise, real-time dose control and essentially complete bioavailability, which is why it is often used in clinical research and closely supervised care. Intramuscular, intranasal, and oral routes are less precise and can be less predictable. Because IV is so controllable, it pairs naturally with continuous in-person monitoring.
How long does an infusion take?
Plan for roughly 1.5 to 2 hours at home per session: preparation, the infusion itself, and a monitored recovery period before your CRNA leaves. Exact timing is set by your protocol.
Does IV ketamine hurt?
Placing the IV involves a brief needle stick, similar to a routine blood draw. The infusion itself is not painful. Your CRNA will make you comfortable before beginning.
How is IV ketamine different from Spravato?
IV ketamine is used off-label for mental-health and pain indications. Spravato (esketamine) is a separate, FDA-approved intranasal medication given only in certified healthcare settings. They are different formulations and routes of administration, and evidence for one does not automatically transfer to the other.
